I was ordered by the Governor to proceed to the interior of China, where I devoted myself to the study of Chinese, and came back here for examination after six months' residence in China. I was then appointed to act for two months as Chief Clerk in the Colonial Secretary's Office. As to the manner in which I performed the duties of those two offices, I would refer to His Excellency the Administrator's despatch, No.1298 of the 14th July, 1882, forwarding a minute by Mr. Stewart, the acting Colonial Secretary, and to Lord Kimberley's reply in despatch No.193 of the 6th September, 1882.
